Born 1956 in California
Lives in Carmel, California
Dennis Doheny is a third-generation Californian and is immersed in the distinctive beauty of the California landscape, particularly along the coast. Growing up in Santa Monica, he spent much time on his father's Santa Barbara ranch learning about ranching while developing a deep appreciation for nature. It was also his father, a recreational painter, who introduced him to art and taught him the fundamentals of painting.
Doheny had worked for a decade as a technical illustrator when his friend, Whitney Ganz, director of the Karges Fine Art gallery, in Bevely Hills, CA, changed the course of Doheny's life dramatically when he and the gallery owner Bill Karges suspended their practice of representing only deceased artists and began to show his work. Theirs was a decision they have not regretted. Now his exclusive dealer, the gallery shows Donehy's art to an ever-growing group of patrons and collectors.
Donehhy paints landscapes in the best tradition of early 30th century California impressionists, yet his work clearly is contemporary. He considers his work to be more realistic than that of early impressionists, although they share a keen sense of place. He often paints the warn glow of late afternoon light falling on little-known scenes he discovers during his frequent scouting trips through the countryside, usually along the Pacific Coast.
In 2023, Doheny received the Autry Award at the Masters of the American West show held at the Autry National Center. He continues to exhibit in the Autry's annual Master's show. He also has won numerous awards from the California Art Club at the Pasadena Historical Museum.
