Margaret Roach WheelerChickasaw / Choctaw, born 1943

Margaret Roach Wheeler is of Chickasaw-Choctaw descent and lives and works in Joplin, Missouri. Through her design company, Mahota Handwovens, Wheeler honors the spirit of her grandmother, Mahota, and combines traditional and contemporary textile techniques to create works of art. Wheeler is recognized as one of the leading American Indian fashion designers and has spoken about her work at the National Museum of the American Indian. Her woven textile and sculptural pieces have been displayed in museums and exhibitions across the country. Wheeler also dedicates her time to educating the art community on Native American fibers and textile styles.
