She is an enrolled member of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Deer Clan. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1995 and Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Cornell University in 2001. In 2002, she was the recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Fellowship and McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists, and in 2014, the Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Community Partnership Grant with the Highpoint Center for Printmaking. Via drawings and paintings, Buffalohead portrays animals and figures that are reminiscent of fairy tales but that narrate, at times, her past experiences. Combined, the imagery lends strength to the oral traditions passed on to her by her family, thereby, providing an unparalleled approach to storytelling.
